Tape in hair extensions have revolutionised the world of hairstyling, offering a quick and effective method to add volume and length to natural hair. They are increasingly becoming the go-to choice for individuals craving a natural look without the long-term commitment of more permanent methods. For those contemplating this hair enhancement, understanding the proper tape in extensions maintenance is essential to maximise both the lifespan of the extensions and the health of your natural hair.

Although tape in extensions are relatively low-maintenance compared to other types of extensions, they require some care to keep them looking their best. Below, we explore the essential do’s and don’ts to help you maintain your tape in hair extensions, ensuring they look flawless and remain in good condition for as long as possible.

    The Do?s

    1. Wash with Care

When washing your hair, use a sulphate-free shampoo to prevent the extensions from slipping or weakening. Gently massaging your scalp while carefully avoiding the roots where the tape is attached will ensure that your hair stays clean without damaging the extensions. It is recommended to wash your hair at least two to three times a week, depending on your daily activities.

    2. Brush Regularly

Invest in a good-quality hairbrush specifically designed for use with extensions. Brushing your hair regularly, ideally twice a day, helps avoid tangles and matting. Start from the ends and work your way up to the roots, holding the extensions at the tape base to prevent unnecessary pulling or tugging.

    3. Protect Your Hair from Heat

While tape in extensions can be styled with hot tools, always use a heat protectant spray before applying any heat. Try to keep the temperature below 180°C, as excessive heat can damage the adhesive and weaken the bonds. Similarly, avoid using styling tools too close to the tape tabs.

    4. Sleep With Care

Before going to bed, tie your hair in a loose ponytail or braid it to minimise friction and tangling while you sleep. Using a silk or satin pillowcase can also help reduce friction and keep your extensions smoother.

    The Don?ts

    1. Don?t Over-condition

While conditioning is important for the health and shine of your hair, be cautious not to over-condition the roots where the tape is located. Excessive conditioner at the roots can weaken the adhesive, causing the extensions to slip.

    2. Avoid Harsh Chemicals

Stay clear of products containing alcohol or oil near the roots. These can break down the adhesive, causing slippage or premature detachment. Stick to products formulated for use with tape in extensions to ensure their longevity.

    3. Don?t Swim Unprotected

Both chlorine and salt water can have detrimental effects on tape in extensions. If you plan to swim, apply a protective leave-in conditioner and tie your hair up to minimise direct exposure. Afterwards, wash and condition your hair as soon as possible to remove any residual chemicals.

    4. Don?t Delay Salon Visits

Regular maintenance is key to keeping your extensions looking pristine. Schedule salon visits every six to eight weeks for a professional check-up, rebalance, or reinstallation. This interval helps ensure that your natural hair remains healthy and that the extensions are properly secured.

By following these simple do’s and don’ts, you can enjoy the benefits of tape in hair extensions while maintaining the health and beauty of your natural hair. Proper care is vital, and with the right approach, your extensions will remain as stunning as the day they were installed, allowing you to flaunt a flawless and voluminous look every day.
